The gift of sight is many times taken for granted. I don’t think it is just being able to see with your eyes. I think it’s really being able to see much more. Our lives tend to be a blur when we get involved in work, family, friends or life. Many times someone will say “Did you see that?” and I’ll have to admit I didn’t. Wasn’t even aware it happened. So sight can also mean awareness. Seeing situations in a metaphorical way which doesn’t use our eyes at all. It’s us using our mind’s eye.
There are so many ways to express this idea. “Didn’t see that coming”, “sight unseen” or “I see what you mean” are just a few to view what happens when we least expect it. And with that kind of sight comes intuition. When I was younger there were times I was moving so fast that I missed a lot. I couldn’t wait to get on to the next experience without really enjoying what I was doing at the moment. I didn’t see how fortunate I was to be where I was, meeting the people I was meeting and watching events that were a once in a lifetime opportunity. I could only see what I didn’t have or what I could be doing if I had more time or more opportunities. I didn’t listen to my intuition when now I see clearly where I went wrong.
A totally engaged person is not only completely present in the moment but can also see into the future. They can see clearly the path of where they want to go regardless of how unpredictable or dodgy it may seem. Because their sight is not afraid of making a mistake. They see it as a chance to challenge themselves. They see they have an opportunity to be happy. They see their happiness! It’s like a young child seeing things for the first time. The beauty of the total abandonment of not caring how they look to other people. They will throw back their heads and squeal with delight at the silliest things.
And then they grow up and see the world with totally different eyes. They get blindsided in relationships. They can see it’s not working but are afraid of the unknown. Afraid of being lonely or lost. They make all kinds of excuses for why they can’t move forward. And what they see through their eyes is that they have failed or that it’s over. In fact, their sight is so clouded they can’t see much of anything. Some regain their sight and move on. Others spend their life seeing defeat.
Thankfully, we have a choice. We have a beautiful world where there is so much to see that is free! It doesn’t need money or fame or success. We can see into each other’s eyes and be totally aware of every minute spent with them. We can see how nature changes minute by minute season by season. We can see how our children grow and thrive with each moment. And we can see if we choose, how the simple things in life can be more than we could ever imagine.
